Ever wonder why some people have such long claws? You know them, even love them. You see amazing potential in them but… and it’s a big but. (Stay with me, not that kind) they’ve got claws. Get close and you’ll get hurt. They never do anything, but boy they can hurt others.

The year was 2011, in the months post-911. While America was still in mourning, Tahnya and I headed to our first overseas assignment, the Sudan. Nothing was as we expected, mostly for the better. Our mentor, Dick Brogden, took me along one afternoon as he took his kids to a local park that had some rusted toys and a few poor pitiful animals in small, small enclosures. PETA would have had a proverbial cow. Except they were goats.

The most shocking part of the trip was these wild goats. They must have been beautiful creations roaming in the wild. Horns high, goatees long. In captivity, their hoofs had grown so long they were curling up, making long claws. The poor creatures would barely walk. You see, the wild goat was not created to be confined on smooth concrete. The cage was too smooth, and didn’t produce the natural wear and tear on his hooves as the dessert terrain.

We were destined to roam free. We were destined for mountain peaks and valleys low. Wear and tear are natural in our lives, even healthy. Put in a believer in a smooth, confined layout, provide for all his needs but crush his or her dreams enough, and the very things that should carry them to the heights, be it insight, perceptivity, wit, whatever; Those are the things that turn into claws with which they hurt anyone who comes near.
