It's not my fault, It's not their fault

15 Dec

Results are in from the Tanzania national exams. Thousands and thousands of students were caught cheating. Amidst a national uproar, the issue of teacher pay and renumeration is again in the news.

The thinking and the easy argument is this. Teachers are so poorly paid, how can they be expected to perform in the classroom. How can they teach in this terrible situation.

As usual, the thinking is not great thinking. The classroom certainly has limitations. Certainly, the schools needs better funding, the teachers need better salaries. However, once you are in the classroom, you have no choice. Its not the kids fault that teacher salaries are bad. Its also not the children's fault if the teachers are bad teachers. They are kids.

Teachers, become better teachers. Prepare children for life, don't teach so they can pass the exams. Its true, some will fail. But if you've been a great teacher, they will acquire a love for learning, a respect for authority, and a positive attitude.

What do you think?

Hi Al – Huge thanks for the reply and the generous offer! I’m thinking that a more effective administrative structure for the awards would be to have one person take responsibility for each category, and for all the category leaders to pool their ideas and expertise in delivering the awards. This way we would make the commitment manageable as well as ensuring the awards are professionally delivered. Certainly not thinking of walking away from my involvement to date – it’s been too much fun!
